Things I took advantage of as a teenager.

You know what's crazy about being married? You kind of have to do everything yourself. There are no parents to pay your bills, make your dinner, and fill up your gas tank. So here are a few things I miss about being young.

-It seemed that we never ran out of toilet paper. I don't know if I just never thought about it, but it seemed as though the closet just spit out a new roll of TP whenever we needed it. Now, if we forget to run to Sam's when we're out...well, lets just say our closet doesn't automatically refill.

-Vacations with friends. Hitching a ride with your best friends family for an awesome vacation pretty much happened every summer. Not having to plan anything and just "going along for the ride" doesn't seem to happen anymore.
Yep, that's me (left) and Lyndsie (right).
-When my pants needed hemmed, my mom and grandma would take care of it for me. I never asked to learn because it never occurred to me that one day I'd need that. Now? I'd kill to know how!

-Having unlimited time to play The Sims. Go ahead, judge me all you want. I played it, and when I'm home alone...I contemplate re installing it on my computer to make a cute little family in a tiny little home that they could barely afford -- just to abandon them a week later.

-Not really caring. It wasn't until my JUNIOR year of high school that my friends and I started wearing make up and actually wearing "name brand" clothes. We didn't pluck our eyebrows or even think about a smart phone. Sometimes, I wish that was still the world we live in! Teenagers now live such different lives, and I'm thankful that social media wasn't huge back then.
So. Much. Hair (and braces! eek!)
-Dinners. My grandma and grandpa always prepared the most amazing dinners every night. I'm talking, EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. We would eat promptly at 5, no phones at the table, with some good home made food. Now, I have to cook for my husband and I... that poor guy.

-Back to school shopping. Alright, alright, although this didn't happen for me much (I paid for most of my own stuff back then) I still miss the tradition of shopping like crazy for myself, once a year. Why isn't this still a "thing"??

Oh man...to be young again! HOWEVER! Being a married adult is also amazing...Caleb and I make our own plans, we buy whatever we want, and sometimes we even say "screw a home cooked meal" and order take out, and its awesome. Growing up is an adjustment, but I wouldn't trade it for the world!

  1. You are speaking some serious truth here, girlfriend! My mom did teach me to hem pants and fix little things but she does a way better job than I do, so I usually will do a crap job on my own and end up getting her to fix them anyway :) And dinners….my mom is an amazing cook and we had family dinner every single night. I don't really care for cooking but I sort of wish I had tried to like it when I was younger, because I totally took for granted that amazing meals would just appear on the table with zero effort involved.

  2. I literally laughed out loud at the toilet paper because I mean, come on, I know we aren't using that much so who is breaking into our house and using all the tp?!?! How does it run out so quickly?! Haha, I feel like I am constantly buying toilet paper! Grown-up probe, for sure.

Teenage Kayla looks awesome and very similar to teenage Emily! :)

  3. This is great and SO true!! I'm not married yet and we don't live together yet, but Matthew and I eat most dinners together at one of our apartments...which means cooking AND cleaning. We sometimes say screw it and get takeout, too! The whole toilet paper thing...my first night in my new apartment last year, I thought I had everything I needed until I realized I didn't have toilet paper!! For some odd reason that never once crossed my mind LOL. This is great post!!

  5. I'm always telling our youth kids to enjoy these moments while they last because being an adult isn't all that it's cracked up to be lol! I completely agree with you on the toilet paper. I was so devastated when I found out that those things just don't automatically appear lol!!

  6. So true! I see my cousins growing up so completely attached to their phones and I'm glad that, though I might be a little too dependent on mine now, I didn't get my first cell phone till I was 17! And how stinkin' cute are you two in those pictures!!

  7. haha- Doug insists that living with a girl means going through toilet paper like 10 times faster than with all guys. It's true.

But I'm with you- being young without responsibilities was awesome, but there are so many great things about being an adult!!

  8. OMG OMG you just spoke my language: The Sims. I swear, I used to spend hours on end playing The Sims. In fact, now that I think about it, I really kinda miss those lazy days haha!

  10. haha yes this is so true! I will say, I did everything myself (on my own) before being married but being married adds another level of responsibility to it!

  11. Yes, yes, and YES. I seriously loved the Sims, but my absolute favorite was Roller Coaster Tycoon. In fact, I might just have to find a new version of it and buy it for myself for Christmas. I totally deserve it, right? Also, the toilet paper thing? So true. I hate when we're down to the final roll. Ugh. Those pictures are excellent, by the way.

  13. I'm coming to your and Erin's SIMS party!!! I loved loved loved making the house and picking out the family. I hardly ever actually played it after that haha. Growing up and getting more responsibility is definitely an adjustment…not sure I'll ever really like ALL of it :P…but I think it also makes the memories of being young that much sweeter. Though, what I wouldn't give for 3 months of nothing every year :P

  15. Ugh, YES!! The toilet paper! I never thought about that, but you're so right. I never had to hunt for it or awkwardly buy it at Target. Now? Yeah. Not so fun.

Also, flip phones instead of smart phones! And I hardly even used mine. Those were the days! I'm so glad I'm not a teenager right now. Yikes.

  16. Now you just get to take care of each other. I so wish someone would make me dinner every night. Or maybe I just wish I had enough motivation to do it every night. It's funny how when we're kids we hate our parents making us learn useful skills like sewing. Now I'm so glad that my mom taught me, and so glad my mother in law knows so much about it.
