Clicking ubsubscribe.

One night last week I found myself at home, almost in tears, overwhelmed at the thought of even looking in the general direction of my to-do list. I was feeling behind on editing clients galleries, our spare bedroom is piled high with random junk we don't know what to do with, and the basement floor was literally hidden under 85% of our dirty clothes.

That's not even all. I still need to schedule a Doctors appointment, I'm behind on my filing at work, my personal photos aren't organized, the chalkboard calendar in our kitchen seriously still says March on it. I mean, I just feel behind...and I'm tired.

I remembered taking "The Simplicity Challenge" from Emily Ley that I posted about back in January. Looks like she was back at it again in June via Instagram and girlfriend's got me all kinds of inspired!

I'm a firm believer that physical clutter = mental clutter = stress = anxiety = tears; at least that's how it works for me. I've noticed that when I come home and Caleb has already made sure the dishes are put away and the dining room table is cleaned off, I feel much more at peace. Or that when laundry is clean and folded and actually PUT AWAY (not sitting in a basket in the hallway all month long), that I can focus more easily.

Emily basically challenges everyone to do small things every day that will make a huge impact by the end of the month. Cleaning out your junk drawer, taking a garbage bag through your house and being ruthless, disinfecting your bathroom, putting away just one load of laundry, unsubscribing from so many emails, etc.! I can honestly tell you that its a culmination of all the little things that make life so much more enjoyable.

Recently I went through my morning emails and gladly hit "unsubscribe" on over 30 of them! That's 30 less emails I have to worry about just clicking delete on. It won't save much time, but having less emails a day will honestly help my brain at work, I know that's true!

What can you do to simplify your life today?!

  1. YES! Physical clutter = mental clutter. Agree 1000% on that one! I've unsubscribed from emails in the past but I'm probably due for another one, thanks for the reminder ;) I'm gonna' go back and stalk Emily's other daily challenges too!

  2. I get that overwhelming feeling too, and decluttering physically helps so much for our mental health too. And yessss to unsubscribing to all those emails, they overwhelm me day to day, and then when we are out of the country on vacay it's no joke coming home to an imploding inbox! Definitely need to clean that up too.

  3. I am trying to get better about that! So many emails I just delete, when I really should be unsubscribing. Now I am trying to be conscious of that! I totally agree with you - if the house is a little picked up and things aren't all over when I get home, my mood is instantly better and definitely not as stressed.

  4. Yes! I have to do the e-mail thing a lot. It's crazy! I avoid my e-mail most days because I don't want to go through them!

  5. I just did that the other day too with my emails. I also totally agree that mess = stress. Which is why I need to actually get my butt in gear with the unpacking in my room instead of avoiding my room...

  6. Yes!! So much of my spam goes to my trash and I just check all and delete. Adios extra chaos.

  7. Love this! I need to unsubscribe to so many places. Yikes! And I just started reading Shauna Neiquist's new book, Present over Perfect and it's all about simplifying to enjoy life more. It is speaking straight to my heart.

  8. It really is so much less stress in your life when you take these small steps. It's amazing how unsubscribing to junk e-mail makes you more happy. Great post!

  9. Breaking it down into smaller action items is such a good way to start tackling it. If you try to do it all at once it is overwhelming and feels impossible! Unsubscribing to emails is probably something I should do. There are way too many that I don't even look at before deleting.

  10. I am the exact same way - clutter makes me a hot mess! I'm constantly decluttering and organizing our home to avoid the tears. Ha!

  11. i love unsubscribing from emails, it's so freeing haha. i don't even know how i get subscribed to most of them. i cleaned out my junk drawer a couple months ago and i've made it a point to keep it tidy and it is such a weight off my mind! i also try and have the laundry put away immediately or the sink free of dishes.. it really does make me feel uneasy when i get home and i 'have' to do a bunch of things, you know? we deserve to relax too.

  12. Wheat thinks I'm insane, but I definitely agree that clutter = stress. I'm constantly going through the apartment, cleaning as much as I can because it makes me feel better to control the space where I live. If I can't control all the other things stressing me out, I'll definitely work on the things I can!
