A recent string of thoughts.

The other day I saw a quote while looking through a friends instagram feed. It stopped me in my tracks and seriously made me think about how I spend my time. The quote read;

"Ralph waldo Emerson once asked what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. no one would sleep that night, of course. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God. Instead, the stars come out every night and we watch television" - Paul Hawkins.

Now, any of you who know me know how much I seriously love binge watching netflix seasons, etc...but Caleb and I have really been trying to limit our time in front of the tube and focus more on each other, our bibles, etc... I sometimes think about what the world would be like if we didn't have things like smart phones, TV's, and this insane amount of technology to distract us. We'd probably be outside all the time, hiking, riding bikes, dive into a new book every night, run around like children, and stay up too late staring at the stars.

I want to live that kind of life. Sure, there's always going to be those nights where we curl up under a blanket and watch a favorite movie while we eat take-out... but I don't want that to be ALL we do. We've made it a point this summer to get outside more. Whether that's for a post-dinner walk, to lay out under the sun, read on the back porch, etc. We just want to savor this time together. Being married without kids won't last forever, and while we don't plan on having babies anytime soon, we want to spend our time TOGETHER. In community. Challenging each other with truth, laughing too hard and staying up way past our "bedtimes". That's how I want to remember our twenties.

So I challenge you to do the same. Do something fun tonight! Whether that's as simple as drawing chalk on the sidewalk, or as crazy as taking a spontaneous next-town trip with a loved one... just make time for those insanely fun moments in life. Time is flying right past us, whether we like it or not, so we may as well make the most out of it.

ALSO!

For those couples out there who want to grow closer together and feel insanely inspired, I ask you to pick up this book. It is SO much fun and I've learned things about Caleb and our relationship I probably would've never known. It asks tons of questions about childhood, funny quirks you didn't know about, and most of the book is full of silly challenges, but it will do nothing but bring you closer tougher. Plus, you get to spend time together while doing the things! :) one of the challenges is that we have to make each other a mix
tape soon. I'm pumped.
Happy hump day, friends! ;)

  1. Totally just ordered that journal. I'm all about cheesy challenges. ;) One of our biggest struggles has been being intentional and putting our phones down, getting away from the TV, getting some fresh air. You're not alone, sister!!

  2. I am probably the queen of plopping down in front of the TV every night and never actually doing anything. I definitely feel the urge to work on that because who knows what fun stuff I'm missing out on because I'm being a couch potato. And that comment about time flying right past us, so true! I cannot believe that we're nearing the end of July already. Where has the month, no the year, gone?!

  3. I love this ! We are three kids in but I think so much of this can still be applied to our family

  4. We end most nights by watching something on TV, but I always make it a point to try to do something weird/fun/different during the week. Realistically, probably not every single day, but I seriously love doing new stuff with Wheat! That quote kind of floors me, too. How many amazing starry nights or gorgeous sunsets have I missed because I was watching New Girl? Ugh.

  5. I often wonder how different things would be without tv and smartphones, and I try to make sure that I set aside time each day to get away from both :)

  6. Cheers to making the most of our time, no matter what season of life we're in!

  7. It's so hard for me to drag myself away from the TV sometimes, but I have been trying to be more cognizant of it in order to "smell the roses" more often! Great quote!

  8. This is so true. It's so easy to come home from a long day and camp out in front of the tv but we are also trying so hard not to do that every night! I'm always so much happier when we connect and talk and cook together or go for a walk. Although a good night of tv is needed once in a while! :)

  13. It's like you took this right out of my head. I've felt so convicted lately on how much I'm on the internet and watching tv. Even though I'm home all day with a baby, I'm trying really hard to not turn the tv anymore. Plus, even at 4 months old she's starting to pay attention to it, and I need to nip that in the bud. I would so much rather go outside or cook or clean or nap or ANYTHING. Though James and I have been watching an episode of Blue Bloods before bed to unwind, and I love it. Just not all day!

  14. I really liked that quote! I've been trying to find things to go in the evening that aren't just watching TV. I've started crocheting again, and we've been getting out of the house more on the weekends. I kind of have been loving it. It's much more exciting as I'm an event driven person, so saying yes to activities instead of just watching TV has been a good way to keep our spirits lifted. I just added that book to my wishlist!

  15. Well that is a really beautiful quote to consider. I'm sure many of us would probably stay out all night under the stars, maybe snap photos and post them on social media sites. Right now, I try to view the world via that same quote, but only difference is I try to make it more applicable to our own lives. Like right now, while we are young, we are able and capable of walking, working, enjoying the beautiful sights (and not so beautiful sights), we are able to make use of all our senses. Who knows what happens in the future, if each of us would still be blessed with perfect vision, limbs that could still keep up with daily activities. I want to live with the same excitement and eagerness as children. I am still a bit guilty though of making too much use of technology. I gotta admit there are days when I spend way too much time on my smartphone or laptop that I miss out on enjoying the moment.
